These earlier cover approaches show how varied the design process can be. I found the earlier graphic approached more intriguing - particularly the glass. I’d read an interview with Amis whilst reading the manuscript and he’d originally thought of titling the novel ‘Black Milk’ - as a nod to the Paul Celan death fugue. This held a particular weight for me - visually disturbing and blackly humorous, which chimed with the novel.
